Toothpastes

We recommend most all fluoride toothpastes, as low concentrations of fluoride help to strengthen enamel, and can even help repair enamel that has early pre-cavity damage. Toothpastes with the American Dental Association Seal of Approval are guaranteed to have the optimal level of fluoride that is both safe and effective.

Prescription-Strength Fluoride Toothpastes

Prescription fluoride toothpastes, such as Control RX, Prevident 5000, and Fluoridex, have a higher concentration of fluoride and are suitable for patients over 14 who have a high risk for dental decay. We may recommend these on an individual basis to assist patients for their highest level of protection.

ToOthPASTES FOR CHILDREN

Fluoride toothpastes are appropriate for children, but the quantity used is very important, as excess fluoride can cause staining of the teeth that are forming in the jaw. For children under 3½ years of age, please use an amount just the size of a grain of rice, twice daily with brushing. Once a child has learned to effectively spit out the toothpaste, a small pea sized amount may be used.

Products for Cleaning in Between Teeth

We all know that toothbrush bristles can’t reach between teeth, and there are many good options to help. Personal preference can surely dictate your choice of inter-dental cleaning aids. When using floss products, be sure to use a “shoe-shine” technique that reaches just below the gumline on each tooth surface.

Woven Dental Flosses

Woven floss helps to comfortably scrub between teeth surfaces, helping to remove the sticky plaque.

Waxed Dental Floss

Some patients may prefer waxed dental floss, such as Johnson and Johnson Waxed Mint Dental Floss. Other generic brands are also effective, such as Western Family and Rite Aid brands.

DENTAL Tape

Dental tape is wider, has a smooth texture, and covers more surface area.

Soft Picks

Soft picks, made by Butler, are a soft-tipped plastic toothpick that are effective for gently cleaning between teeth where it may be difficult to floss.

Proxabrushes

A Proxabrush is a small, slim brush that can reach between teeth and is especially effective around orthodontic appliances. They even come in a traveler version that has a cover and can easily fit in purse or pocket.

Stimudents

Stimudents are triangular shaped toothpicks that come in a convenient-to-carry paper pouch. They are made of soft birch wood and are shaped like the area between your teeth at the gumline.

Floss Threaders

Floss Threaders provide access for flossing under bridges and orthodontic wires. They work like a flexible needle threader, and are re-usable. Single use versions, with floss attached, are also quite useful.

Toothbrushes

We only and always recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes, which can clean your teeth thoroughly without abrading the gums or root surfaces. We also highly recommend electric toothbrushes, as you’ll see below.

Sonicare

Sonicare brand electric toothbrushes are highly effective at removing plaque and stains with an ultrasonic vibration in the bristles. The rechargeable batteries last quite well – typically up to 4 years and beyond.

Other Dental Health Aids

WATER PIKs

Water Piks are highly effective at removing food particles that may be left behind after brushing and flossing. They provide an irrigation technique that, when directed at the gumline, can flush away bacteria and stimulate the gum tissue.

Tongue Scrapers

These helpful tools reduce bacteria in your mouth with a few scrapes, and can help keep breath smelling fresh.

Sports Mouth Guards

We recommend wearing sports mouth guards for all sports – from skateboarding and soccer to basketball and football. Trauma from any sports can injure teeth and gums, and even casue tooth loss, but sports guards have been proven to protect atheletes from dental injury. You can buy an inexpensive ‘boil-and-bite’ style at the sporting goods store, and it will work well. We can also make a customized sports guard for the ultimate protection. We love our athletes’ smiles!
